Welcome to day 4 of the 5-Day Beginner Sewing Challenge!

One of the biggest myths about sewing is that it is “cheap”. Truth is, fabric prices have been rising over the years, and sometimes it can cost more money to make things yourself after you purchase your fabric and all of the supplies you will need to complete it. This is why for today’s challenge I wanted to do some upcycling. Today, we will be taking something old and making it new again!

For this beginner sewing challenge:

Take a look around you! Do you see anything that you are holding onto that you are not using but you just feel bad throwing in the garbage? Old backpacks? Cloths that could use a little “pick me up”? Keychains or keyrings?  Old pillows or cushions you can recover? Did your new jacket come with a few spare buttons? These projects and supplies are all around us.  All we have to do is keep our eyes open and be creative.  For today, your challenge is:

  1. Find a few things around your house that you could utilize in your sewing room.
  2. Comment with what you found.
  3. If you have time today make a project with one of your items and share it.

To complete this challenge:

By commenting on this post below you can help others in the future who are taking part in this challenge. Sharing your findings and ideas could spark inspiration to fuel the sewing fire! Or you can find the designated post in the Beginner Sewing Facebook group as well for further interaction with challenge participants. Pictures are welcomed and encouraged if you had time to sew a project today.

About Joan Mantini

After several years of being the Facebook page owner at Beginner Sewing, I noticed there was a desperate need to have a single go-to spot for members to be able to find answers to their common questions, get some useful tips & tricks, as well as find reputable places to purchase sewing products online. Taking my role as a trade publication editor by day, and combining it with my knowledge of frequently requested beginner sewing advice, I created www.https://beginner-sewing.com/. An outlet that gives new sewists a free digital magazine geared for entry level sewing as an extra bonus!
