Welcome to day 3 of the 5-Day Beginner Sewing Challenge! Today is about stepping outside of your fabric comfort zone.
If you are just starting out, chances are you are becoming familiar with sewing cotton fabrics. These are a great choice of fabric for beginners! Or perhaps you have been sewing for longer but you notice you tend to sew with the same “fabric family” in your projects. I have seen time and time again members of the Beginner Sewing Facebook group nervous to order/purchase or try a fabric that they are not familiar with. So this beginner sewing challenge is dedicated to all of you who need the extra support in stepping out of your fabric comfort zone.
For this beginner sewing challenge:
Choose a fabric that you have NOT attempted to sew yet but are curious about learning more about its qualities. You now have two options:
- If you have this fabric type around your house, give it a test! Jump right in! Now is your chance. Tell us which fabric you chose. How was it to sew? Did you need to do anything different to prep your machine to sew this fabric? Was it difficult? Would you recommend it to a beginner sewist? And finally… if you could make a project with this type of fabric, what would you make? BONUS if you have time to get that started today!
- If you do not have it lying around, today is a day of researching for you. Do an internet search on sewing with this fabric. Do you need a special foot? A special stitch? New needle? What are some of the characteristics of this fabric? Is it easy to work with? What types of sewing projects would you make with this?
To complete this challenge:
You can comment on this post to let others know your outcome from today’s challenge. Or you can find the designated post in the Beginner Sewing Facebook group as well for further interaction with challenge participants. Pictures are welcomed and encouraged.
